300 Jobs Lost at Gatwick Airport

By: Cindy Norgte

Aviance, a company that provides ground handling services, security services, cargo services and passenger services to a variety of UK airports, has announced that it will cut 308 jobs from Gatwick Airport in August this year. The company claim that it is no longer viable for them to operate as a result of the punishing financial restrictions that govern UK airports.

Unite, which represents 80,000 aviation workers, said that the job cuts would sadden workers throughout the aviation industry. Unite's National Secretary for civil aviation Steve Turner said of the losses: "These job losses are a huge shock and will bring misery to hundreds of workers, their families and the wider community. We will be doing everything in our power to mitigate the impact, including seeking ways to redeploy workers within other handlers."

Mick Rix, national officer of the GMB union, which also represents aviation workers, emphasised this view and said that "loyal, experienced" workers would be "upset" by the job cuts. He said: "This announcement will not only bring despair and upset to a loyal, experienced and safe workforce, but to the UK aviation industry as a whole. GMB members will feel saddened and shocked that their loyalty and hard work is being undercut in a company they helped create."

Mr Turner said the government should treat these job losses as an indication that "something is seriously wrong" with the financial regulations they have imposed in UK airports. He said: "When a leading provider of baggage handling says its operation at the second largest airport in the country is no longer viable, then something has gone seriously wrong. Government and the aviation industry must take note and act. They have imposed a punishing financial regime on the industry, one that encourages attacks on costs and cuts in service."
Mr Rix also held the government responsible for these job cuts and for the state of the aviation industry as a whole. He said: "The GMB calls upon the Government to do what they say, and help create stable British employment opportunities that can provide quality passenger services and ensure minimum standards apply across this sector. The aviation industry must halt the decline and stop the race to the bottom."

Aviance has attributed the job cuts to "fundamental changes" in its Gatwick business that was discovered at a recent business review. They said: "A full review of the Gatwick (LGW) business was recently carried out, which demonstrated that the Aviance cost base and customer profile could not be sustained within the LGW business model." However, the company said that these changes were unique to their Gatwick operations and would not be affecting their business in other airports. They said: "The circumstances which necessitate the closure are unique to LGW, and have arisen from changes there related to open skies, competitive pressures and changes to their customer profile."

Aviance has said that the 308 workers made redundant at Heathrow will by receive help to find other jobs.
