Acne - the Bane of Teenagers Everywhere

By: Ben Needles

Acne is quite a common skin disorder especially among teenagers. Teenagers continuously undergo various hormonal changes in their body as they are growing up. Thus, as the teenager grows towards adulthood, he or she really has no way of stopping the changes happening altogether, only lessening its effects. Most people outgrow acne by their early twenties, but some women suffer from acne way into their forties and even fifties.

Acne occurs when tiny sweat holes on the surface of the skin called pores become clogged. Every single one of the pore is an opening to a follicle, which contains a hair and a sebaceous gland, or more commonly called an oil gland. These oil glands which lubricate our skin and hairs becomes the cause of acne when their normal functions are blocked. Oily skin, blackheads, pimples, redness and enlarged pores are the most common acne symptoms.

Besides hormonal changes in the body, acne can worsen by the persons indiscriminate diet, cosmetics, birth control pills, excessive sun heat and humidity. Taking more fibers in their diet, like vegetables and fruits, and reducing extremely oily food is a good start. Wearing a big hat to cut out the sun can help cool down the skin on the face. Using water-based cover-up cosmetics and making sure to wash them off at bedtime is essential.

For mild cases of acne, several lotions and creams are available without a prescription. There are also some effective home remedies that can help. For more severe cases of acne, it is advisable to get a doctor to look at it. Severe cases of acne may require acne treatments in the form of oral antibiotics, laser treatments or even surgery.

Severe cases of acne can be both emotionally and physically scarring. Severe acne consists of redness, deep cysts, swelling and can cause permanent damage to the skin. In this sort of severe acne, the sufferer should see a skin specialist or dermatologist. Severe acne not only lower a persons self esteem, if left untreated it can leave deep scars that will definitely affect the persons self confidence in the social circle.

Male teenagers are more susceptible to scarring. This is because these young men do not seek doctors advice as often as young women do. Young men, too, tend to squeeze their pimples, thus increasing the incidences of inflammatory acne. Scarring is usually accompanied by some extent of skin discoloration.
