By: Karri Madelline

The main access route to Jimmy’s Hospital on Beckett Street and was closed to the public after an explosion.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said, ‘One of the main access routes to Jimmy’s had been closed, but the Accident and Emergency department was still functioning normally.’

The emergency services launched a major operation to protect hospital patients, staff and residents.

Luckily only five people were injured in the explosion and they were treated at St James’s hospital.

There have been claims made that residents had smelt gas earlier on in the day before the explosion at the Pub.

United Utilities said, ‘the gas network firm had not received any reports of a gas leak. The first they knew of any gas leak was after the explosion.’

The main gates of the hospital are situated across from the Fountain Head pub where the explosion occurred.

The explosion on the 22nd April ripped through the former Florence Nightingale pub in Becket Street. The pub is owned by Mansfield Ales and had not been open for sometime.

The entire roof of the pub was blown off during the explosion and the upper windows were also shattered.

Three 18-storey blocks of flats that overlook the Pub where also shook by the blast that sent tremors through the buildings.

A student who witnessed the explosion spoke of the aftermath saying, ‘I couldn’t believe how much damage was caused. There was smoke everywhere and the pub was just gone and smashed to bits.’

Debris from the explosion at the pub was also left strewn over the area leaving several cars damaged.

A resident of Shakespeare Court said, ‘I could feel the whole building shake and the noise of the blast was deafening.’
