Manchester Reaches the Grade

By: Karri Madelline

The English Heritage make sure that all buildings that are granted Grade Listings should adhere to strict guidelines that are set to maintain authenticity of period styling.

Grade Listed buildings have to be recognised as being of great value to Great Britain to be granted a grade.

The buildings or structures selected by the English Heritage are said to be of great historical and national importance.

Furthermore a building that is deemed as being of national importance is also recognised by the English Heritage.

However to demolish or partially demolish a property, the English Heritage and other interested bodies would have to be consulted about the plans.

The English Heritage and other concerned bodies have to be consulted on plans to demolish or partially demolish a Grade I or II* build.

Nonetheless it is very rare for permission to be granted to demolish a Grade listed build.

Partial demolition maybe granted if it is to be replaced with something that is in keeping with the period of the building.

Permission has to be granted if anyone wishes to substantially change the look of a Grade Listed building, whether it is internally or externally.

This is because Grade I and II* buildings are outstanding examples of our heritage, with the grade showing that the buildings hold exceptional importance to the country.

The proposed changes to a Grade I or II* building has to be substantiated by the English Heritage organisation.

However to modify or expand on a Grade II listed building requires the consent of the local authorities and not the English Heritage.

In Greater Manchester there are forty-seven Grade I listed buildings. The majority of these builds date back to the Edwardian and Victorian era and have been recognised for their importance whether it be historically, architecturally and nationally.
