What Is Mastering?

Music is pleasant to the ears. Producing a very good music involves a lot of process from its creation up to its reproduction. One of these processes is a critical procedure called mastering. In this procedure, the audio recording is enhanced for perfection and greater sound quality. This stage is a very important part of the entire process of producing the album.

A lot of people may not know that between recording and the reproduction of the music contained in the CD, there is still a vital stage. It is in this stage that the audio was made into the sound quality that everybody hears. The quality of the sound as it was heard by people is done through mastering.

Mastering involves the preparation and transfer of the recording into its final storage medium, which is the copy used for mass reproduction. The entire procedure is done by a specialist in audio engineering called mastering engineer. A special type of equipment is used for the procedure.

Basically, there are three steps in the mastering process. All these steps are vital in the creation of a very good sounding CD music. First, the recorded audio, or tracks, are arranged into a sequence. The spaces between each song will be arranged to avoid overlapping or too long or too short transition of songs.

After the sequencing, comes now the “sweetening” of the audio. In this stage, the songs is enhanced or improved by removing the impurities of the audio. The volume levels of each song are equalized. The frequency will be balanced for consistency. Unnecessary noises are reduced or eliminated. And a lot of other actions are undertaken. All of these are performed under the skillful ears and amazing knowledge of the mastering engineer.

The final stage in the mastering process is the transfer of the audio into its final storage device. The recording is then transported into the CD, audio tape or other device. It is this device that will be used for the replication of the album. This procedure will dictate the quality of the album.

In audio mastering, the experience and expertise of the mastering engineer plays a vital role. The engineer is responsible for the outcome of the product. Whether the song will sound professional or not will depend on the capability of the engineer. The equipment used in the procedure is just as important as the engineer.

The entire procedure is usually done in a mastering studio. The facility is different from a recording studio in that it has a distinct purpose and the equipment is entirely special and dedicated only for the process. Studios have two ways to master a recording. These are the digital mastering and analog mastering. Some studios have both tools, while others are dedicated only into one method.

It is always better to have the recording processed in mastering. The advantage of having an expert hear and treat the audio, using his years of technical and practical know-how, will translate into a better and improved sound quality. The benefits are great, and the outcome will surely be satisfying.
