There is a growing incidence of hair loss among both males and females. This incidence is hard to predict though it generally could start between the age of 12 and 40 years. One of the common causes of hair loss is stress. Given, the hectic life schedule, stress occurs in some form to most of us and unless the stress is tackled it could lead to hair falling. Even women could suffer from the androgenetic alopecia, also called female pattern baldness.

The most common hair loss among male is the pattern hair loss and it is around 95% of all hair loss cases. One must go for a hair loss treatment, which suits to their specific needs. Women have hair loss at the time of menopause or pregnancy. This is due to hormonal changes that women undergo during these times. There could be hair loss after getting treatment for cancer. Hence most of the treatment pertaining to hair loss use of reducing enzymatic activity that occurs in the scalp.

There are different causes of hair loss. One of the common causes is infection by some fungus. This type of hair loss could be treated easily using topical medicine. However, the reason for male baldness is hormonal imbalance. There could be over activity or under activity of the thyroid gland that could result in hair loss. If there are changes in the level of androgen and estrogen, the male and female hormones, it could lead to hair loss. In these cases, doctor prescribes hormone or steroid injections to counter hormonal imbalances.

Another common cause of hair loss is due to the different diseases. This could include long illness, stress or some major surgery that could lead to large amount of hair loss. However, there is no hair loss for temporary illnesses. There could result hair loss for such diseases like lupus or diabetes. One must find the cause of their hair loss as it reflects the first sign of disease.

Women often suffer from hair loss after giving birth to child. In this case, the women often lose hair after 3 to 4 months of delivery. This results due to the surge in hormone level at the time of pregnancy and later. However, this hair loss stops after a certain time and there is new growth of hair.

It has been found that there are some hair losses as a result of taking in certain medicines like anticoagulants, chemotherapy, antidepressant medicines, over usage of vitamin A and birth control pills.

Of course, hair loss occurs to all of us daily. However, the body again grows the hair to compensate for this loss. It needs mentioning here that around ten percent of the hair follicles found on the scalp remain dormant after hair fall. Again, after a period of 2 to 3 months, there is new growth of hair follicles in the dormant area. The hair follicle growth happens for 2 to 6 years in the scalp. The hair grows approximately 1 centimeter in a month.
