Music Pirates

By: Liam Powell

Today it is one of the simplest things to download any kind of music from the Internet. And in fact a small quantity of people thinks about legal aspects of this activity. Who wants to think about the law when there is a possibility to download a lot of music for free? Such situation is something like a threat for many recording companies, because this activity is considered as music piracy.

Music piracy is presented in three forms:
1. Illigal massive production of music CD disks.
2. Illegal making copies of legally bought music CD disks.
3. Illegal downloading of digital copies of recorded music.

According to statistic calculations, music piracy affects negatively the state of the USA economy. The general picture is far from ideal. Thanks to music piracy the US economy loses near $12.5 billion every year. It leads to loses of job places and increasing the level of unemployment.

This data are given after observing the level of sales of CD disks. It is clear seen that this level decreased a lot. And this decrease is caused not only by the activity of music pirates, but also popularity of other music formats like MP3. Such music formats replace CD disks rather fast. Decrease of CDs’ popularity leads to the close of many CD stores. For example, in 2006 the largest international music seller-Tower records- closed forever.
