Planning a Houston Wedding Reception

By: Brad Schneider

Once the question's been popped by an appropriately attired beau down on one knee, the sparkling ring is sitting pretty on the manicured finger of a southern belle and celebratory champagne has been popped, it's time to get down to business.

Most newly engaged couples quickly realize that only one of them feels very strongly about planning the wedding. In fact, in many cases, the groom-to-be is shocked to realize that his honey has been planning wedding details in her head since the age of four, when she first played bride with a pillowcase as a veil.

With all those years of dreaming and pre-planning under her belt, it's to be expected that the bride-to-be already has some firm ideas of what is and is not going to be acceptable for her wedding. As she's attended the weddings of family members and friends, she's filed away little touches that could add to her special day, as well as compiled a list of southern traditions she'll want to follow.

For most southern belles, tradition reigns, and planning their Houston wedding receptions will be an exercise in formality. One of the first big decisions is often a non-issue for southern brides: the guest list. In other areas of the country, creating the guest list is a painstaking process of whittling name after name away. Weddings in Houston, however, often have guests counts in the hundreds, including both the bride's and groom's extended families, as well as family friends and acquaintances.

Guest List Size:
To balance the size of the guest list, the wedding party tends to be significant as well. Among many Houston wedding receptions, the bride is often attended by 6-10 bridesmaids, plus honor attendants, junior bridesmaids and flower girls. Accordingly, the groom's side has an equal number of attendants. The symmetrical look a bride and groom centered between 20 or more attendants is very dramatic, and certainly gives the wedding a feeling of elegance and sophistication.

As is common in the South, the following traditions are often woven into Houston wedding receptions.

Pre-wedding Showers and Parties:
Prior to the day of the wedding and the grand reception, it's traditional for a bride to be feted by the members of her wedding party, as well as other close friends. While family members usually attend the parties, they don't generally host them. The showers are traditionally female-only zones, where the bride-to-be will receive gifts that will help in setting up her home, as well as marriage advice.

Honoring Relatives:
During a typical Houston wedding reception, a table might be decorated with family portraits, especially of some deceased family members, like a loved and missed set of grand parents. A song might be dedicated to a favorite aunt who passed away, or to honor the anniversaries of other married couples. Pictures, songs, even floral arrangements dedicated to family are common ways of expressing the importance of family to the attending guests.

Groom's Cake:
Despite the questionable armadillo cake that has become pop culture lexicon, a groom's cake does still have a place at most Houston wedding facilities. More frivolous and personality driven than the larger wedding cake, the groom's cake is usually based on a hobby of his. College football mascots, guitars, fishing poles and cars are all popular shapes for the groom's cake, which is often chocolate.

These traditions, and a wealth of others, contribute to the overall feel that makes a wedding reception in Houston unique, allowing the couple's love of family, friends and their heritage to shine through.
