Purchasing a Fishing Rod

By: Robert Thomson

If you have an interest in fishing, there are many different types of poles on the market. Buying them can be overwhelming as you look at rows and rows of poles. But it’s important to remember that there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration before putting money on a pole.

The first two things that you need to consider are what type of fishing will you be doing with the pole and how experienced are you? If this is going to be one of your first few times out fishing, you will probably want to choose a make that is specifically designed for beginners. Choose one that is easy to use, which is generally a spinning pole because they are easiest to use.

You also want to consider what poundage you need your pole to be able to take care of. This is when the type of fishing you will be doing comes into consideration. If you’re looking to catch pike or salmon, you’ll need something that can take care of bigger fish. Whereas if you’re going to be fishing for trout, it will be best to look for a pole that is a little bit lighter and easier to take care of. For smaller fish, you can also choose a smaller pole, about 4 ½ to 6 feet will work well. For larger fish and bait, you will most likely need a pole that is longer than 6 feet long to provide a larger capacity and give you more length for casting.

Whichever type of pole you choose, you want to make sure that it fits comfortably in your hand. This might seem like a small factor but it can make all the difference when you have spent the day fishing. You want to make sure that it has a comfortable grip and that it fits in your hand nicely. And lastly, you want to test how flexible the pole is. To do this, simply make a casting motion with the pole and watch how easily the end moves.
