The term Search Engine Optimisation or SEO in short has become a very popular term since the introduction of Internet marketing. Search Engine Optimisation is a process by means of which volume and quality of traffic to any web site from search engines is improved by using organic or algorithmic search results. Usually it is considered that earlier a site is presented in search or what is usually said as getting "higher ranking", the site would attract more visitors. SEO could consider different kinds of search that could include image search, local search and industry-specific vertical search.

As has already been said earlier, search engine positioning or "ranking" is perhaps the most important factor to be considered for effective web site design and management. It should be the aim of any web designer to make web site as accessible as possible to search engines. This will enable these search engines to collect information about these web sites. This information in turn would help the potential users to locate the web site easily.

Now let us consider a few factors for effective Search Engine Optimisation. It is to be remembered always that main goal should be to enable the search engine crawlers to move through the web site easily. To enable this, any roadblock these crawlers face should be removed. They would include HTML errors, lack of navigation tools, insufficient text, dead or moved links and "page not found" errors.

Next important factor is proper choice of key words. It is these key words used in the contents of the web site that the search engines would use to place the web site in their database in proper category. In selecting key words the help of such tools like Google AdWords could be used. Such a tool would produce a list of relevant key words along with statistics about what your competition is using an approximate average search volume.

Another factor to be considered is the use of clearly labeled tags and categories properly. It is by tagging a mini-category is created in a web site. The process is similar to the selection of key words but not exactly the same. Proper categorization would enable the visitors to the site to navigate and retrieve the relevant information easily. You could use an automated tool that will produce a list of tags based on criteria entered by you. These automated tools could be located by searching the Internet.

These are some of the steps undertaken in Search Engine Optimisation that would enable your site rank higher in search engine results. But, there are many more steps that are taken care of by the experts in this field.
