Sectional Sofa Tips

By: Gradlein

A sectional sofa (or simply called a "sectional") is a type of upholstery composed of several individual sofa sections (thus the name) that can be arranged to create the seating arrangement one is after. The design makes it so that it can be arranged in any shape as one may see fit. A Berkline sectional is usually composed of three types of pieces: chairs, corners, and sofas.

The chair which is also a part of the sectional and is a type of furniture designed for seating one person, may have an arm on either side, is usually placed at the end of a sectional. An armless chair can be placed in between other sections to extend the length of the sectional.

The corner is a special section that allows the sectional to turn in a 90-degree angle. The back of the seat can either be curved or squared. The corner section is important when arranging the sectional to form a specific shape like an "L" or a "U" shape.

The sofa is a two- or three-seat couch with an arm on one end. Since it has an arm on either end, it is usually placed at the end of the sectional. Depending on its length, it can also serve as a bed. There are some sofas that have a pull-out sleeper. There are also some that are designed for both sitting and sleeping and you will easily recognize one just by looking at the size and the arms. A sofa designed for sleeping is usually wider and have low arms that you can use as a substitute pillow for your head.

Sectionals are designed for comfort and style. Choosing a sectional and its pieces can be tedious especially if you're not sure what you want. You can't simply go to the store and purchase a Berkline Harper 3 pc sectional just because it looks nice. There are various things to consider when looking for a sectional: the design, purpose, and size.

First thing to consider would be how long the sectional should be and what shape it should take when placed in your home. This would determine the number and types of sections for the sectional. For example, if it's going to be "U" shaped then it would require several sofas, chairs, and two corners. Measuring the area where the sofa would be placed is important or you may be purchasing Berkline furniture that would not fit in your home. Start by measuring the dimensions of the entryway followed by the room's area. After doing that, you will have a basis on how much space you can allot for your sectional and purchase one that would fit those dimensions that you took.

Another thing to consider is the purpose. This would determine the style of the sectional that you would purchase. The sofa back depends on whether you are looking for more comfort or easier maintenance. If you are looking for comfort then choose either loose-pillow backs or multi-pillow backs. If you want something that can be maintained easier, tight-pillow backs may be for you as they usually don't have pillows so they have lower-cost maintenance. The fabric of the sectional would also depend on the expected longevity and amount of time you can allot for cleaning the furniture.

The design for the Berkline sofa should match the style of the room you are placing it in. If you have a contemporary styled home then choose something that has a modern look. The colors should also go well with the other décor in the room.
