The Must-have Password Manager Features

By: Mikhail Andriyanov

Every time surfing the web we deal with passwords. This article will review the software tool called password manager – a program that helps very much with this everyday routine. Almost everyone uses e-mail and internet banking and the most of us are subscribed to lots of other web services which all require authorization. Remembering the sequence of random letters, symbols and numbers for every service you use is quite uninteresting task. Even if you use only 3 or 4 passwords for all your subscriptions you still need to change them from time to time. There are lots of problems that follow up this demand: passwords can be lost, they can be forgotten, they are difficult to remember, they should be securely stored, etc.

However, all those problems can be easily solved or prevented with the use of a small utility – a password manager. This peace of software lets you surf the web in much more comfortable way and doesn’t let you waste your time on many boring duties. The main job that is done by a password manager is auto login. It handles the database containing all your logins and passwords and uses this information to correctly auto fill any form requiring this information. With the use of this option you won’t need not only to remember passwords, but also to type them in. But it’s not the only thing a password manager can do and it can bring you lots of other benefits.

The other feature that is offered by a good password manager is a password generator. Everyone knows that you need to use many diverse passwords for different services and you need to change them on a regular basis to keep your private information and data secure. The passwords should consist of random symbols and thinking them of can take a lot of time. A strong password generator will create you secure passwords of needed length and criteria that can meet safety policy of any organization. No need to sit and create random letters and numbers yourself – it’s all can be done by a password manager. Needless to say, the generated data can automatically be remembered by the form filler.

The next benefit that is brought by a password manager is well-organized and secure storage of logins, passwords and other private information like credit cards details and PINs, passport numbers, different code words, etc. Some people can say that this option is useless as you can store such data anywhere, but let’s look at the alternatives. We can write our private data on a peace of paper but it can be easily lost, accidentally thrown away, destroyed or read by someone else. Another variant is to write your private data into a text file, but there is no strong protection and it’s not a well-organized way. Modern password managers also offer automatic backup of this database for the case when all the data on your PC is lost.

We should also admit that some password managers can be installed on a USB key. If you use such a program, all the described features will become available on any computer you plug your USB flash drive into. Your private data remains secure, but you gain almost the same convenience level as you have on your home computer.

All things considered, password managers can be very useful for all kind of people that deal with the Internet. No matter if you are a businessman, a housewife, an engineer or a student – anyway, you will feel many advantages if you decide to use this program.
