The Top 5 Tourist Attractions on the Costa Almeria

If you have the time or the inclination to remove yourself from the beach, swimming pool or bar on your vacation, here are the top five tourist attractions and recommended tours on the Costa Almeria, Spain:

1. Cartagena is an extraordinary city with fine, well preserved ancient buildings, narrow, picturesque cobbled streets and has other more modern tourist attractions in abundance including one of the world’s oldest submarines, the Peral which is very interesting to tour, as it was built 124 years ago in Cadiz, Spain. Close to the submarine and port area are parts of the defensive walls which once surrounded the old city. Other attractions in Cartagena include the tree lined promenades with fountains and lots of children’s play areas, the Castillo de San Felipe (an ancient fort built in the 1600s), the Naval Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.

2. Texas Hollywood is a film set where the famous spaghetti westerns such as “the Good the Bad and the Ugly” and a “Fistful of Dollars” were filmed (no, they weren’t filmed in Italy). Nowadays they are open to the public and there is even a wild west saloon complete with swing doors, where you can order yourself a drink and watch the cowboys come in and have a shoot out, which will scare the life out of the unwary. There is also a photography studio where you can dress up in western attire and have a memento of the day; playground, animals, restaurant and a museum all open from 12.00-18.00 daily.

3. Mojacar is another delightful, historic city with meandering cobbled alleyways and beautiful ancient buildings, including the famous 15th Century Castle, the Old Customs House, the Plaza Nueva, and the Puerta de la Ciudad. The restaurants, shopping, and people watching are also to be recommended from a nice pavement bar or cafe.

4. The old so called “Troglodyte villages” in Costa Almeria are an ever popular attraction and well worth a visit. Even today people still live in these cave homes dug into the side of the cliffs. In particular the village of Sante Fe de Modujar comes well recommended

5. The Vera Bull Ring was built in 1879 and has recently been renovated to something like its former glory. It is a huge arena with a seating capacity of over six thousand people and there is a museum with free entry. Don’t forget that bull fights still take place there regularly, although not to be recommended for the faint hearted!
