Things you would not have known about your Air Conditioner

By: D. Raskin

Air conditioning is the term which can also be pronounced as AC. Air Conditioners are basically a

device which helps in cooling the room. Moreover Air Conditioners can be used in both summers as well as in

winters. In summer Air Conditioners are used for cooling the room and in winters AC is used for controlling the

temperature. In other words we can say that in winter AC is also used for making the room hot. In short we can

simply say that AC is an appliance, system, or mechanism designed to extract heat from an area using a

refrigeration cycle. Moreover complete system of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning is termed as HVAC.

The most important purpose of Air Conditioners in the home as well as in the car is to provide comfort during

either hot or cold weather conditions.

Now what is HVAC? Well HVAC can be pronounced either "H-V-A-C" or, occasionally, "H-vak" is an acronym

that stands for "heating, ventilating, and air conditioning". HVAC is sometimes referred to as climate control

mechanism and is particularly important in the design of medium to large industrial and office buildings such as

skyscrapers and in marine environments such as aquariums, where humidity and temperature must all be

closely regulated whilst maintaining safe and healthy condition.

Let’s dwell into basics of Air Conditioners. In the refrigeration cycle, a heat pump transfers heat from a lower

temperature heat source into a higher temperature heat sink. Heat which is released would definitely move in the

opposite direction. The most common type of air conditioning are of this type .A refrigerator works in much the

same way, as it pumps the heat out of the interior into the room in which it is present.

The most important thing is that this cycle takes advantage of the universal gas law PV = nRT, where P is

pressure, V is volume, R is the universal gas constant, T is temperature, and n is the number of moles of gas (1

mole = 6.022×1023 molecules). Since as we all know that evaporation occurs when heat is absorbed, and

condensation occurs when heat is released, so for this reason air conditioners are designed to use a

compressor to cause pressure changes between two compartments, and actively condense and pump a

refrigerant around. A refrigerant is pumped into the cooled compartment i.e. the evaporator coil, where the low

pressure and low temperature cause the refrigerant to evaporate into a vapour, taking heat with it. In the other

compartment called the condenser, the refrigerant vapour is compressed and forced through another heat

exchange coil, which condensing into a liquid, rejecting the heat previously absorbed from the cooled space.

Humidity can also be controlled with the Air Conditioners. In other words we can simply say that refrigeration air

conditioning equipment usually reduces the humidity of the air which is processed by the system. Since humans

perspire to provide natural cooling by the evaporation or perspiration from the skin, drier air up moves upward

which improves the comfort level. Moreover the comfort air conditioner is designed to create a 40% to 60%

relative humidity in the occupied space and most importantly in food retailing establishments large open chillier

cabinets act as highly effective air dehumidifying units.
