West Yorkshire Fight Terrorism

By: Karri Madelline

West Yorkshire Police are introducing a new foundation ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) PREVENT strategy.

It will be the new face of Neighbourhood Policing policy in West Yorkshire and includes 47 teams.

These teams will work within the community, dealing with issues affecting people at a local level.

The task of the teams is to prevent the young and vulnerable being drawn into a world of extremism.

The police want the community to get involved to look out for signs of change in these individuals.

Relatives and friends of the July 7th Bombers, noted that they had become ‘changed individuals.’

The focus of the police in the past has been around building a structure to protect national security and to arrest those who threaten it.

Counter-terrorism hubs has been created for areas with the greatest threat and have had recognised success in apprehending those individuals involved.

All this in turn has helped the police to target and stop individuals carrying out acts of terrorism in the United Kingdom.

The foundation has been set up by the police to understand how people that are born and raised in this country can turn to extreme terrorism.

The Police force wants to concentrate on how these individuals are drawn into these groups and why they feel excluded and disenfranchised from society.

The police are concentrating on embedding positive neighbourhood policing in the local community.

Research carried out in last year found that Muslims would prefer to go to other agencies if they had concerns about extremism.

It was found that if concerns were raised about extremism in their community the police would be very low down on their list of agencies to contact.

The police force has to address these issues by establishing a relationship and trust within the community.

Local policing touches the local community in one way where as the local authority partners engage with the same community in different and dynamics ways.

Showing that for the project to work the police and the community have to work together.
